Lisa Janbell & Dijle Neva Yigitbas’ aptly and descriptively titled, joint piece DEVOTED - Frequencies through sound and movements at MDT, intentionally plays out in the intersection between music and dance. As such it wraps closer around the M in MDT. Making use in the midst of voice enhancing and amplifying; a 50 minutes’ jamming session has never gone by so fast with such instant and consistent response from your attention system. Exciting, ethereal sounds come at you as an onslaught; while the choreographic movements are in minor key but in total causal effect to the music. They say brat summer is over; thank god, but there’s a midway to demure; and this is it. Lisa Janbell’s mischievous facial expressions constantly exude a sense of humor about neither being chained by diarrhetic seriousness nor bratty and blasé over-everything-ness. The trifecta on stage all contribute to a dynamic where the unexpected is to be expected until the quietly jazzy end. Framed by a sculpturally embellished scaffolding set - elegant - that seriously calls to mind the (largely) forgotten Banks Violette; this for MDT is a refreshing fare to offer us, the audience.
